Wildcats Close Road Trip in Style, Reach 20 Wins on the Season

The Best Start in Program History Continues

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Weber State Wildcat softball team closed out its lengthy California road trip on Saturday with a 8-1 victory against CSUN, and a 3-1 win over the San Diego Toreros.

After the Cats had lost to CSUN on Friday, it was clear that they were looking to get revenge on a sunny Saturday in San Diego. The Matadors scored first in the opening inning to get their lone run of the day, and it was all Wildcats after that.

In the bottom of the stanza after leadoff hitter Mia Rushton reached base, she was promptly brought home on a double by McKell McCuistion to level the game at one, McCuistion advanced to third on a throwing error. On a wild pitch later in the inning, McCuistion came home to give Weber State a lead that it would never relinquish.

Arissa Henderson held the Matadors scoreless in the second inning, and the Cats blew things open from there. After Gianna Memoli and Rushton both singled with one out, McCuistion came back to the plate and popped the ball over the wall for a three-run blast, her fourth of the year, and the rout was on as the Cats took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the second.

In the top of the third, Mary Kay Amicone made a pitching change and Mariah Ramirez came into the circle and locked things down from there. She gave up one hit in the inning but struck two Matadors out to start her outing and get Weber State out of the inning.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the fourth when the WSU offense got going again. Rushton and McCuistion both drew one-out walks, and the Cats pulled off a double steal to move the runners to second and third, respectively. Chloe Camarero reached on an error to load the bases, and a Noelle Foster flair over the infield drove in two runs. Camarero went to steal third and came home to score on a throwing error and punctuate the scoring with the Wildcats' eighth run.

It was smooth sailing from there as Ramirez only allowed two more base runners and closed the game out to pick up her seventh win of the season, as the Wildcats took an 8-1 win into their final game of this spring break road trip.

It was Amanda Sink getting and answering the call to start in the circle for Weber State against the San Diego Toreros.

Sink had struck out three Toreros through the first three innings to keep San Diego at bay and give the Wildcat bats a chance to make something happen. In the fourth inning, Weber State was able to score the first run of the game on a fielder's choice that brought Faith Hoe in from third base. Weber State led 1-0.

An in-the-zone Sink retired six of the next seven batters she faced and neither team got back on the scoreboard until the top of the sixth when the Cats did some more damage.
Faith Hoe drew a one out walk and Mika Chong, who finished the game going 3-3 at the dish, singled to move Hoe to second base. Abigail Sagert scorched a single to score Hoe and move Chong to third, and she later scored on a fielding error which made the score 3-0.

The Toreros finally got to Sink in the sixth inning with a triple and a single to score their lone run, but it was too little too late against a dominant pitcher.

Sink retired the next five batters she would face, and the Wildcats closed out the game with a 3-1 win. The two wins on Saturday gave WSU softball 20 for the season and improve on what has been far and away the best start in program history.

WSU will return home for its first home game of the year on March 22 when it plays in-state rival Utah Valley at Wildcat Softball Field. The home opener against the Wolverines is slated to start at 4:00 PM.

Season tickets to see WSU softball can be purchased online or by calling the Weber State ticket office at 801-626-8500.
