Wildcats Nearly Upset No. 22 Sun Devils, Close Out LIttlewood Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. – Weber State Wildcat softball closed out the Littlewood Classic by nearly pulling off its first-ever win over a ranked opponent, but ultimately falling to No. 22 Arizona State at Farrington Stadium.
It was the Devils who got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. An ASU single to the outfield brought the game's first run to the plate to give ASU a 1-0 lead on its home field.
The Wildcats immediately scratched back. On the first pitch of her at bat, third baseman Emily Ruhl sent a screamer beyond the wall for her first home run of the season. Her solo shot knotted the game up at one in the top of the second inning.
WSU rallied with two outs in the top half of the third. With nobody on, McKell McCuistion hit the ball to some open outfield grass for a single, she came flying around third base when the following batter, Mika Chong, found a gap in the outfield for an RBI double. WSU took a 2-1 lead.
That score remained until the bottom of the fourth when ASU tied the game up on an RBI single, the Sun Devils scored again on a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth to give ASU a 3-2 lead that ultimate proved to be the final tally. Weber State (3-7) was extremely competitive throughout and made life difficult for the 22nd-ranked Sun Devils, but the Wildcats close out the Littlewood Classic with the one-run loss.

-Amanda Johnson was the pitcher of record on Sunday. Her final line read: 6.0 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 4 SO.
-Six Wildcats tallied hits in the game.

The Wildcats will return to the Beehive State next weekend for a two-day, three-team tournament hosted by Utah Tech. Weber State's first pitch will be against St. Louis on Saturday, February 25 at 11 AM. Information about how to follow the tournament will be released as it becomes available
