ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Weber State softball team opened the Utah Tech Tournament by splitting its Saturday games against St. Louis and Utah Tech.
The opening game against the Bilikens wasn't short on highlights. The Wildcat offense really kicked things off in the top of the second when Emily Ruhl led things off with a single to the outfield. Mia Rushton followed that up with a single of her own. The runners advanced to second and third, respectively, and a Gianna Memoli base hit brought one run home and advanced Rushton to third. Later in the inning, a McKell McCuistion single to the outfield plated another Wildcat, and two more runners came home on a Lauren Hoe double. It was 4-0 for Weber State by the middle of the second.
St. Louis answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third to make it 4-1.
WSU clapped back in their half of the fifth. Mika Chong kickstarted the offense with a double to the outfield. Lauren Hoe walked and KC Whiting reached on an infield single to load the bases. Ruhl reached on an error that scored another Wildcat to extend the lead to 5-1. Rushton singled home another run and the bases remained full of Wildcats. Memoli got on base on a fielder's choice that scored another Wildcat and WSU rounded out its scoring with a 7-1 lead to end its half of the inning.
The Bilikens cut their deficit to 7-4 with a trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Even with a sizable three-run lead the Wildcat bats weren't finished yet.
Rushton reached base again with a single and Memoli was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Makayla Donahoo touched base safely after a single, and Faith Hoe reached on a base on balls to score a run and keep the bases full. McCuistion drove another run home with a single. Lauren Hoe drew a walk to score another runner, and Whiting reached after seeing four balls to score yet another runner. Abby Grundy hit a deep fly ball to the outfield to score McCuistion from third and WSU ended its half of the seventh with 12 runs scored to give the 'Cats a new season high.
St. Louis went quietly into the St. George afternoon after being unable to bring anyone home in the seventh. WSU won 12-4.
The following game wasn't so kind to the Wildcats. Weber State fell into an 11-0 hole by the fifth inning against the Utah Tech Trailblazers, but was capable of scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the game. Tech tacked on another four runs in the sixth, and although the Wildcats scored another runner, it wasn't enough to extend the game. WSU fell to the Trailblazers 16-5.
