ST. GEORGE, Utah – Weber State Wildcat softball closed out the Utah Tech Tournament by beating the St. Louis Bilikens, and falling to the tournament host Utah Tech Trailblazers on Sunday.
The Wildcats got on the board early when Sarah Ruhl hit a solo home run to put WSU up 1-0 in the second inning. A Makayla Donahoo single brought home Mia Rushton to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead in the second.
St. Louis got a run back in the third, but the Wildcats immediately wrangled a bunch of runs of their own. After reaching base, McKell McCuistion was brought home when Mika Chong sent a base hit to the green grass of the outfield to make it 3-1. Sarah Ruhl drove in two more runs when she got her second hit of the day and Weber State seized a 5-1 lead.
Neither team was able to get back on the board until the sixth inning when Weber State scored the final run of the game. An error in left field allowed the Wildcat base runners to advance and Weber State's speed allowed two more Wildcats to score, making the score 7-1. That score would hold, and the Wildcats (5-8, 0-0) picked up the victory to beat St. Louis for the second time in as many days.
The Wildcats stayed to complete its doubleheader by facing the Utah Tech Trailblazers. It was a back-and-forth affair between the two sides. The Wildcats struck first as Wildcat legend, Lauren Hoe drove Chong home in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Tech tied it up in the bottom of the first.
WSU regained its one-run advantage in the top of the second on a throwing miscue from the Trailblazers. Weber State's speedy Victoria Rey took off for second base and Mia Rushton, who was on third, took off for the plate after a throwing error from the catcher. Weber State took a 2-1 lead.
A Utah Tech home run capped off three unanswered runs for the Trailblazers and they took a 4-2 advantage from WSU, but Lauren Hoe quickly answered. In the top of the fifth and with McCuistion on base, Lauren crushed the ball over the wall at Karl Brooks Field to tie the game at four.
Tech scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth to put the Wildcat bats in a difficult situation, but KC Whiting's sacrifice fly tied the game in the top of the seventh. The Trailblazers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and finally broke through to score to win the game. Weber State (5-9) closes out the Utah Tech tournament with a 2-2 record.
