Weber State softball sweeps day two of UTSA Invitational

The Wildcats advance to the championship game of the tournament to be played tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. MT.
Game One - Weber State 15, SIUE 5 (5 Inn.)
- First to get on the board, Weber State's Taegan Smith scored off a Kiaira Smith groundout to second base.Â
- To tie the game 1-1 in the first inning, SIUE hit a home run to center field.
- The Wildcats brought in two more runs in the top of the third on a Kiaira Smith RBI and Gianna Memoli two-RBI hit.
- Again, SIUE tied up the game 4-4 in the third inning with two home runs.
- It was all Weber State in the fourth inning as the Wildcats totaled 11 runs.Â
- Unable to recover in the fifth inning, the Cougars fell 15-5 in five innings to the Wildcats.
- Riley Whalen earned her first home run of the season and the first of her career.Â
- Jayci Finch earned the win, pitching 2.1 innings and recording one strikeout.
- Whalen led the team offensively, going 3-for-4 at the plate with one home run and five RBI.
- Memoli went 3-for-4 at bat with four RBI.
- Kiaira Smith finished the game with two RBI.Â
- It was all Weber State from start to finish as three Wildcats recorded home runs.
- To begin the game in the bottom of the first, Eva Richardson homered to left field, putting the Wildcats up 3-0.Â
- Shortly after, Memoli hit a home run to center field, and in the bottom of the second, hit another to right-center field. In total, she brought home four RBI.
- Richardson wasn't finished yet, as she also recorded another home run in the bottom of the second, driving in two RBI and advancing the Wildcats' score to 6-2.
- Freshman Apple Maldonado hit her first home run as a Wildcat in the bottom of the fourth, and the 'Cats were up 11-2.
- Unable to recover, SIUE fell to Weber State.
- Joslynn Veltien earned the win, pitching 4.0 innings and recording four strikeouts.Â
- Richardson and Memoli both went 2-for-3 at bat and led the Wildcats with two home runs each.Â
"We played great Wildcat softball today. We faced adversity multiple times and chose to respond well by being good at what we are good at and remembering what makes us successful. We are 23 players strong and as a family we will continue to grow and get better. Today was a great stepping stone toward our goals for the future."
