Weber State starts 2020 season with a double header sweep

Weber State softball started the 2020 season sweeping the double header on opening day by first taking down New Mexico 4-1 and later defeating Grand Canyon 7-6.Â
What head coach Mary Kay Amicone said: "It was a great opening day. I loved our fight and belief in ourselves today. Mariah Ramirez had a very good game throwing a two hitter. Game Two was a blas. Our pitchers kept us in the game and KC had a clutch double to keep us close. Faith and Lauren were outstanding. McKell had the walk off base hit in the seventh to end the day. It was a great day."Â
GAME ONE -Â
How it happened: Â The first two innings went scoreless for both teams. In the bottom of the third New Mexico was the first to get on the board taking a 1-0 lead. Weber State quickly answered in the top of the fourth inning. Chloe Camarero started the inning with a solo homerun to tie the game 1-1.Â
In the top of the fifth inning, Katelyn Whiting led off with a single up the middle. Takesha Saltern followed her up with a triple to score Whiting for an RBI. Landi Hawker then singled to left for an RBI. Noelle Foster ended the inning with an RBI to put WSU up 4-1 after the top of the fifth.Â
The game finished out scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings and WSU started the season off with a 4-1 victory.Â

At the plate: Weber State scored four runs from nine hits and recorded four RBIs. The Wildcats drew three walks and had just three strikeouts and left five runners on base.Â
WSU was led by Lauren Hoe who went 3-3. Camarero led WSU in crossing the plate as she recorded two runs.Â
In the field: WSU had 21 putouts and five assists and one error. Moeai led the defense with seven solo putouts. Lauren Hoe added six.Â
In the circle: Â Mariah Ramirez started in the circle for Weber State. She pitched all seven innings and gave up just two hits and one run with no errors. She had nine walks and came away with six strikeouts in the 33 batters faced.
GAME TWO -
How it happened: Grand Canyon didn't waste any time getting on the board as they put two across the plate in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the second Faith Hoe doubled to center field and advanced to third to put WSU in scoring position. McKell McCuistion singled through the right side for an RBI scoring Faith Hoe.Â
After three complete innings WSU trailed 2-1.Â
Grand Canyon put up three more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead over the Wildcats.Â
In the bottom of the fourth, Weber State got two quick outs to start things off. Faith Hoe then walked to get on base and Lauren Hoe followed that up with a single through the right side. McCuistion was hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded with two outs.Â
Katelyn Whiting doubled to the left side for three RBIs. Courtney Pestka followed that up with a single and RBI and as the fourth inning concluded the game was tied 5-5.Â
The fifth and sixth innings were scoreless for both teams. In the top of the seventh GCU was able to get one run across to take a 6-5 lead over WSU.Â
WSU showed its grit in the seventh inning. Landi Hawker started things off by getting on base. Faith Hoe came up with another base on balls advancing Hawker into scoring position. Lauren Hoe singled to center field and Hawker scored tying the game up at 6-6.Â
With two outs, McCuistion stepped up to the plate and singled for the game winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh.Â

In the circle: Â Kate Donaldson started in the circle for WSU and pitched 3.1 innings. She gave up nine hits and five runs and four errors. She didn't have any walks in the 21 batters face.Â
Freshman Amanda Sink made her collegiate debut in the circle and pitched three innings. She gave up one hit and one run and one error. She recorded three walks and two strikeouts in the 13 batters face.  Â
Mariah Ramirez came in to close out the game and pitched 0.2 innings. She gave up one hit and no runs. She had one walk and one strikeout in the four batters faced.Â
Notes to know:Â Weber State has a 2-0 record on the season.Â
Up Next: Weber State will remain in Phoenix, AZ and will take on Stanford and GCU tomorrow.Â
