Weber State splits second day at the GCU Kickoff

Weber State softball continued the opening weekend by splitting the double header today. WSU first lost to Stanford with a 9-2 score and then later defeated Grand Canyon 6-2. 

GAME ONE - 

How it happened:  The first two innings went scoreless for both teams, however Faith Hoe recorded a single in the top of the first. 

In the bottom of the third inning, Stanford put seven runs on the board to take a big lead over WSU. 

In the top of the fourth, Brooke Moeai walked to get on base. McKell McCuistion doubled to left center for an RBI to put the Wildcats on the board. 

WSU was able to get another run across the plate in the top of the fifth and after five complete innings, the Wildcats trailed 8-2. 

Stanford put another run up in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score 9-2. WSU couldn't get any more across in the top of seven and Stanford claimed the 9-2 win. 
 
At the plate: Weber State scored two runs from three hits and recorded just one RBI and one double. The Wildcats drew two walks and had seven strikeouts and left five runners on base. 

WSU was led by McKell McCuisition who went 1-2 but recorded WSU's one RBI and one double. 

In the field: WSU had 18 putouts and seven assists and two errors. Brooke Moeai Courtney Pestka led the defense with four solo putouts. Faith Hoe had three assists. 

In the circle:  Kate Donaldson started in the circle for WSU and pitched 2.2 innings. She gave up seven hits, seven runs, one error and had two walks in the 18 batters faced. She now has a 0-1 record on the season. 

Amanda Sink came into relieve Donaldson and pitched 3.1 innings. She gave up six hits, two runs, two errors and two walks. She had two strikeouts in the 19 batters faced. 

GAME TWO -

How it happened: Takesha Saltern led off for the Wildcats against GCU in style with a triple to left field. Landi Hawker followed that up with a single and advanced to second. Faith Hoe doubled down the left field line for two RBIs putting WSU on the board. 

McKell McCuistion also found a hit in the first inning for an RBI. By the end of the first inning, WSU had a 3-0 lead over GCU. 

The second inning went scoreless for both teams. In the top of the third inning, Lauren Hoe started off with a single and advanced to second to get into scoring position. Brooke Moeai then doubled to center field to score Lauren Hoe. WSU had a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the third. 

The Lopes hit one over the fence in the bottom of the third for two runs and to cut WSU's lead in half. 

The fourth inning went scoreless but WSU came into the top of the fifth with some fire. Faith Hoe started off with a single. Twin sister, Lauren Hoe stepped up to the plate and hit a home run over the left center fence for two RBIs. The fifth inning came to an end and Weber State had a 6-2 lead. 


At the plate: Weber State scored six runs from 14 hits with six RBIs, two doubles, one triple and one homerun. WSU didn't draw any walks and had four strikeouts. 

Lauren Hoe led WSU going 2-3 at the plate with two RBIs from her one homerun. Takesha Saltern had a solid day at the plate as well going 3-4 and had a triple. 

In the field: WSU had 21 putouts and five assists. Laure Hoe had seven point outs 

In the circle:  Mariah Ramirez pitched all seven innings for WSU. She gave up seven hits and two runs. Ramirez had five walks and seven strikeouts in the 35 batters faced. 

Notes to know:  Weber State has a 3-1 overall record now on the season. 

Up Next: Weber State will remain in Phoenix, AZ and will take on Stanford tomorrow.
