Weber State takes down North Dakota 7-4

Weber State softball ended the San Diego Classic with a 7-4 victory over North Dakota Sunday afternoon.

What head coach Mary Kay Amicone said: "Kate Donaldson was very effective in the circle today. Our team picked up some additional runs throughout the game to help. Takesha Saltern and Hailey Fisher had some timely hits to spark us."

How it happened: To start things off in the top of the second, Courtney Pestka drew a walk to get on base. Brooke Moeai drove a ball into left field and thanks to a Fighting Hawk error, Pestka was able to score. Abigail Sagert had a double to center field for an RBI. Ashlyn Visser also came up with a hit for an RBI. 

North Dakota was able to get one run across the plate in the bottom of the second.After two complete innings, Weber State had a 3-1 one lead. 

In the top of the third, the Wildcats put another run on the board to push their lead to 4-1. 

It wasn't until the sixth inning that either team was able to score again. Takesha Saltern started the top of six off with a home run to right center. Later, Faith Hoe singled to right field and Hailey Fisher then came through with a home run to center field for two RBI. 

In the bottom of the sixth, North Dakota put one more run on the board. Going into the final inning of play WSU had a 7-2 lead. 

The Fighting Hawks made a push for victory by putting up two runs in the seventh, but WSU locked down on defense and closed out the game with a 7-4 win. 

At the plate: WSU scored seven runs from 10 hits including six RBIs, one double and two home runs. Saltern went 2-5 at the plate with one run scored, two RBIs and a homerun. Sagert went 3-4 from the plate with one run, one RBI and one double. 

In the field: Weber State had 21 putouts and 13 assists. Visser had 10 putouts and Sagert had six. 

In the circle:  Kate Donaldson started in the circle for WSU and pitched 6.0 innings. She faced 28 batters and gave up nine hits, four runs, four errors and one walk. She did have four strikeouts. 

Amanda Sink came in and pitched the last inning. She faced four batters. 

Notes to know:  Weber State has a 7-13 overall record now on the season. 

Up Next: Weber State will head to Reno, Nevada to take on University of the Pacific and University of Nevada.
