Weber State Splits Pair In Missoula

5/7/2021 9:10:00 PM | Softball

MISSOULA, Mont. – Weber State opened up the final series of the regular season on Friday with a doubleheader split with the University of Montana at Grizzly Softball Field. The home side took the opener, pulling off a 7-6 win in the final inning, but the Wildcats responded with a 10-2 run-rule victory in the nightcap.

WSU (24-17 overall; 14-3 in Big Sky play) jumped out early in the first game of the afternoon, scoring twice in the second inning on a Lauren Hoe two-run home run, and adding another run in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

The Grizzlies (16-27; 8-9) answered in their half of the third inning, scoring five times on five hits. McKenna Tjaden led the way in the frame with a two-run double, while Lexi Knauss followed with an RBI triple.

Mia Rushton drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-4, but Montana added another run in the sixth to push the lead back to a pair of runs.

In the top of the sixth, Makayla Donahoo and Rushton led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and Ashlyn Visser came up with a huge hit, lining a double to right center to knot the game at 6-6.

The game went to the bottom of the seventh, when the Grizzlies loaded the bases with one out. Anna Toon ended the game with a walk-off single after an epic battle with WSU pitcher Mariah Ramirez, grounding the 16th pitch of the at-bat up the middle for the game-winner.

Montana carried the momentum into the opening inning of the second game, scoring first on a Cami Sellers RBI single in the first inning.

Weber State quickly responded, and broke the game open with 10 runs over the next three innings. Rushton drove in a run to equalize the game in the second inning, and Katelyn Whiting followed with a two-RBI double to put the 'Cats ahead 3-1.

In the third inning, a Brooke Hatfield sacrifice fly made it 4-1, and Rushton provided the inning's big blow with a two-run single to left.

The Wildcats put the game away in the fourth inning, with Rushton striking again, as the freshman outfielder picked up her fourth and fifth RBI's of the game with a single to left center.

Amanda Sink went the distance for Weber State in the circle, scattering six hits and one walk over five innings of work to allow only a a pair of runs while striking out one batter. The win moves Sink's record to 4-2 on the season.

Rushton went 4-for-7 on the day with a pair of runs and a team-high six RBI to lead the Weber State offense on the day.

The two teams will finish off the Big Sky regular season with the series finale on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
