Wildcats Win Shootout, Sweep Bengals
4/2/2022 4:50:00 PM | Softball
The Weber State Wildcat softball finished off a sweep of the Idaho State Bengals with an absolutely bonkers 17-11 win at Miller Ranch Stadium on Saturday.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning with Makayla Donahoo, Faith Hoe, and Mika Chong each with an RBI. The Bengals answered with five runs of their own to take a 5-3 lead in the second. The Cats stayed quiet in the third, but ISU tacked on a couple more runs to extend its lead to 7-3 after three.
In the fourth inning, Katelyn Whiting walked and advanced to third on a Donahoo double, then Whiting came home on an error to cut the Bengal lead to three, but ISU had an answer of its own. The Bengals put two more runs on the board with a fourth inning home run and extended their lead to 9-4, and it looked like the Cats might be in danger of losing the series finale.
The fifth inning is where everything was turned upside down.
Chloe Camarero, the team leader in home runs, sent a solo shot over the Miller Ranch Stadium fence to give the slugger her tenth home run of the year and alter the score to 9-5. Following a McKell McCuistion single, Lauren Hoe launched a two-run tank on to the hills of Pocatello and cut the deficit to just a couple of runs. Daisy Taloa was hit by a pitch to put a runner on for Mariah Ramirez, who showed off some of the power she displayed in 2021. The pitcher sent a towering fly ball beyond the wall tied the game up at nine runs each and give the Cats their third dinger of the inning.
The Bengals retook the lead in their half of the inning with a two-run single to make it 11-9.
The #NoQuitCats would not be denied.
An eight-run sixth inning put WSU in front for good. Donahoo knocked in two runs on a double, followed by another two-run double from Mia Rushton gave Weber State the lead. A third double came off the bat of Faith Hoe and plated Rushton, and a Chong base knock scored Hoe from second. The scoring was capped by a two-run blast from McCuistion changed the score to 17-11, and nobody would score after that.
Weber State sweeps the Bengals for the second straight year, and the win gives moves WSU to 25-8 (3-0) on the season.

QUOTABLES
"That was a really tough win, they didn't make it easy on us. Overall really good fight. We weren't going to stop until the last pitch. There is so much fight in us and with our energy, I'm obsessed with this team. One of the things we tried to focus on was just trying to do our job and get on base and that's exactly what we did. It was awesome." – Chloe Camarero
"If you want to hashtag it, '#NoQuitCats'. It's really getting in there and getting gritty and know that we don't control the conditions. You've got to keep battling and putting the ball in play but there is nothing routine about playing today. We don't control the weather. We did the best that we could to maintain, and kudos to our pitching staff for keeping us in it. We're really about getting better every time we have a chance to play." – Mary Kay Amicone
