OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State Wildcat softball team continued its historic start to the season with a pair of wins against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds on Friday.
In the series opener between the two teams, Arissa Henderson locked things down in the circle and the onslaught began early as the Cats pounced out to a two-run lead in the first inning. A McKell McCuistion double to the outfield scored Chloe Camarero, then Emily Ruhl drove McCuistion home with a double of her own.
The barrage continued in the second inning as the Wildcats kept passing the baton and plating runners. A total of five Wildcats crossed home plate in the inning, highlighted by RBI doubles from Ruhl and Big Sky Player of the Week Mika Chong.
The third inning brought more of the same as Weber State plated three more Wildcats to extend the lead and officially put SUU on run-rule watch. The runs came in the form of taking home on a wild pitch, a bases loaded walk, and a sacrifice fly.
The scoring was capped off in the fourth as Camarero drew a bases-loaded walk and another runner came home. With the T-Birds unable to muster an answer in the fifth, the game finished in run-rule fashion with a final score of 11-0.
Henderson tossed a three-hit gem, allowing no walks and striking out five Thunderbirds on the day.
The first inning of second game of the doubleheader would be a bit of a premonition for the way the rest of the game would go. Mariah Ramirez, the starter for the Wildcats, struck out the side to open what ended up being a masterful performance from Ramirez.
The Wildcats weren't able to get on the board until the third inning when a clutch Camarero brought home a pair of runners on a two-out double beyond the infield, and WSU took a 2-0 advantage. Ruhl ended up driving in one more runner to extend the lead to 3-0, two more runs than Ramirez would need on the day.
Through four innings, Ramirez had struck out eight T-Birds and the record watch was on.
In the fifth, Ramirez struck out two more to move her strikeout total to ten on the day. In the bottom of the inning, McCuistion drove another run home with a double, then Camarero came home on a passed ball to give the Cats a five-run edge.
Three up and three down for Ramirez in the sixth, everyone she faced went down swinging. 13 strikeouts, a new career high and school record.
The Wildcat offense rounded things out with a Faith Hoe single that scored Katelyn Whiting and pushing the WSU lead to 6-0.
In the seventh inning, with history made and more history on the line, Ramirez didn't disappoint. The first batter she faced: struck out looking. After hitting the next batter, Ramirez sent the following hitter back to the dug out on a called third strike. SUU's final chance came up to the plate with a runner on and two outs, but a precise, near-flawless
Ramirez dialed it in and got the final batter swinging.
16 strikeouts to tie the all-time Big Sky Conference record for most strikeouts in a game.
Weber State's two wins on Friday move the Wildcats to 27-8 on the year, and they remain unblemished in Big Sky play at 5-0.
NOTABLES
"Honestly, I just felt good, just was throwing hard, trusting myself more than placing it and that's what really put it together. Honestly, just mixing speeds, the change up was working pretty good today. Hitting that corner and getting tight spins on curves and screws, it couldn't have been better, just like butter." – Mo Ramirez
"Wonderful way to start at home in the conference. I think our pitching and defense were great. All three pitchers were great, Hatty came in and did her job which was fun to see. Mo really had her stuff working which was awesome. When she's locked in like that, she's a real force. She's been that way her whole career. She's a competitor through and through." - Mary Kay Amicone
